Pope says anti-Islam quotes not his own views
Muslims wanted the Pope to make a clear apology for quoting 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus in a speech in Germany last week, saying everything the Prophet Mohammad brought was evil, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
At his weekly public audience in the Vatican, the German-born Pope, speaking in Italian, repeated his earlier remarks that the crisis was caused by a "misunderstanding."
"But for the careful reader of my text it is clear that I in no way wanted to make mine the negative words pronounced by the medieval emperor and their polemical content does not reflect my personal conviction," the Pope said.
"My intention was very different. I wanted to explain that religion and violence do not go together but religion and reason do," he said.
The 79-year-old leader of the world's one billion Roman Catholics said he hoped the whole furor could eventually serve to encourage "positive and even self-critical dialogue, both among religions as well as between modern reason and the faith of Christians."Sunday, October 15, 2006
Rat Food
Example: [Collected via e-mail, 2006]
Origins: We don't know the specific origins of the pictures displayed above, but they probably are real images of rats being prepared for human consumption somewhere in Asia. However, it's rather unlikely, as the text accompanying the photos implies, that the rats pictured are vermin rounded up off the street and foisted uponunsuspecting diners as chicken.
The level of preparation and presentation pictured here is indicative of a restaurant (or perhaps a private home) in a part of China where clean, fresh, farm-captured rats are lavishly prepared and served to diners eager to consume rat-meat dishes. Indeed, in some parts of China rat meat sells for considerably more than chicken, pork, or beef.
In 2000, New Yorker reporter Peter Hessler journeyed to Luogang, a small village in China's Guangdong Province specifically because he'd heard Luogang was home to "a famous restaurant that specialized in the preparation of rats." Upon his arrival, he discovered there were two such restaurants (the Highest Ranking Wild Flavor Restaurant and the New Eight Sceneries Wild Flavor Food City) in the village, with a third under construction. Here are a few excerpts from his article, describing what he found out about the preparation and consumption of rats at those restaurants:
Many people come from faraway places. They come from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macao. One customer came all the way from America with her son. They were visiting relatives in Luogang, and the family brought them here to eat. She said you couldn't find this kind of food in America.
At the Highest Ranking Wild Flavor Restaurant, I began with a dish called Simmered Mountain Rat with Black Beans. There were plenty of other options on the menu
I ate the beans first. They tasted fine. I poked at the rat meat. It was clearly well done, and it was attractively garnished with onions, leeks, and ginger. Nestled in a light sauce were skinny rat thighs, short strips of rat flank, and delicate, toylike rat ribs.
"We're not eating city rats," [the restaurant's owner told me]. "The mountain rats are clean, because they aren't eating anything dirty. Mostly, they eat fruit
I watched dozens of peasants come down from the hills, looking to get a piece of the rat business. They came on mopeds, on bicycles, and on foot. All of them carried burlap sacks of squirming rats that had been trapped on their farms. In Luogang, rats are more expensive than pork or chicken. A pound of rat costs nearly twice as much as a pound of beef.

Sewer Ghost
Examples: [Collected on the Internet, 2006]
She was pushed About 6 years ago in Indiana, Carmen Winstead was pushed down a sewer opening by FACT: 2 months ago, 16 year old David Gregory read this post and didn't repost it. When he went to take a shower he heard laughter from his shower, he started freaking out and ran to his computer to repost it, He said goodnight to his mom and went to sleep, If you don't repost this saying "She was pushed" or "They Pushed her down a sewer" Then Carmen will get you, either from a sewer, the toilet, the shower, or when you go to sleep you'll wake up in the sewer, in the dark, then Carmen will come and kill you. About 6 years ago in Indiana, Jessica Smith was pushed down a sewer opening by FACT: 2 months ago, 16 year old Ron Anderson read this post and didn't repost it. When he went to take a shower he heard laughter from his shower, he started freaking out and ran to his computer to repost it, He said goodnight to his mom and went to sleep, If you don't repost this saying "She was pushed" or "They Pushed her down a sewer" Then Jessica will get you, either from a sewer, the toilet, the shower, or when you go to sleep you'll wake up in the sewer, in the dark, then Jessica will come and kill you. |
Origins: In October 2006, the spooky story about a teen killed by a fall into a sewer after five other girls shoved her began circulating in
No adolescent girl named Carmen Winstead or Jessica Smith died in such fashion, in Indiana, or in any other U.S. state "about six years ago." We searched for news reports about such a death and found none. This is a fiction, a typical chain letter of the sort favored by
As is common with "luck generation" or "ill luck avoidance" chain letters, a specific dire outcome is promised those who do not speed the tale on its way (the ghost of the murdered girl will seek them out and kill them), with proof of the danger being flirted with provided via the included news about the sorry fate that befell someone who failed to heed those instructions (his dead body discovered in the sewer, "his neck broke and his face skin peeled off"). We discuss two other examples of this type of chain letter: one ("Bed Reckoning") uses a seemingly spooky photo; the other ("Skinned Flick") builds upon a fictitious Instant Message exchange.

Women's Fashion Shoes, Boots and Hosiery Autumn 2006 Winter 2007
Ladies Fashion Shoes
A new fashion look in footwear includes stylish cone heels. Ladies fashion shoes have wooden heels, leopard print or use reptilian look materials. Some are flat comfy shoes like ballerina shoes. Others steal ideas from the shipyard and use rope to make both bags and footwear. Shoes are also trimmed with luxury furs.
Look out for T-bar shoes, ankle strap shoes and designer boots in Lurex python skins.
These velvet wedges to the left from Boden have a real party look for them, making them perfect as an Autumn Winter ladies fashion shoe.
Images from the autumn 2006 range of ladies fashion shoes courtesy of Boden UK.
Ballerina Flats
Ballerina flats with round toes in all types of materials including animal, gold, metallics and velvets are winter winners. These ladies fashion shoes on the right are a velvet range by Boden.
Animal Print Shoes
Animal prints abound in fashion accessories. These zebra print ballerina flats just below right are from online site www.prettyballerinas.com. They come in a range of colours including the red version.
The ballerina flats are made in several animal prints of varying scales and impressed leathers as well as golden tones. Many more gold ballerina flats are featured on the gold accessory page.
Some of the styles at pretty ballerinas are delightful. I especially like these animal print ballerina shoes with gold bows and these red rose suede ballerina shoes. In fact I might order a pair of either quite soon! They look perfect for Christmas too and what great gifts they would make, they really are so very pretty.
Maybe you prefer really high footwear. If so, the glamour of red high heeled shoes will easily liven up a plain black dress.Or treat yourself to some Christian Louboutin shoes which have the trademark red soles.
These low cut Mary Jane red and dark red patent shoes right are from Matalan and are a bargain price. The shiny patent look is new fad gaining momentum. Look out for cone heels like those on the darker red shoes. Cone heels vary in height so there is a style for every ladies fashion shoe.
The pretty flat red tongue buckle ballerina shoes from Accessorize left, offer a modern alternative to be worn with shorter clothes, £35/€54.
You can easily imagine skipping around town wearing these easy flats and shopping until you drop.
Women's Fashion Boots
This winter my preference though is for laced up shoes or bootie shoes like these wonderful feminine ankle boots left from Principles.
The laced up fashion shoes on the right are by River Island.
If you area traditionalist when it comes to women's fashion boots, then these heeled suede tan boots may carry you through the winter.
They will tone well with all those gold clothes you add to your wardrobe. Tan suede boots like these from Principles right, also look great with denim.
Many women's fashion boots have extra straps which have either biker or equestrian associations.
These practical and affordable styles of fashion boots below are all from Benetton. With the hottest look once again being Equestrian riding touches in boots.
Fur Fashion Boots
These white fur fashion boots to the left are from Dolce and Gabbana and are part of their layered looks. While, the green boots on the right, are the Benetton version of these fashionable fur boots. Don't they just look warm, comfortable and fun to wear.
Hosiery
By wearing ribbed tights or dark colours like plum, bottle green, black, grey, brown, violet it's possible to show lots of leg in tights. If these are too dull for you consider figured, lace or motif tights such as these by NEXT DIRECTORY UK.
Contemporary looks this fall are easily achieved by the addition of opaque tights. Wolford are known leaders of some of the best fashion tights that will last and not look mangled easily with wear. Choose sheer pantyhose more carefully so that it is sheer rather than old lady looking. You can find a great selection of tights at wolfordboutiquelondon.com.
Even argyle pattern knee socks were given an airing at fashion shows.
No-Shows
No-shows are marketing man's answer to capture lost sales of tights in summer. These fashion accessories are also useful too. They consist of foot tubes or cases that cover just the toes, foot sole and heels or are simply no more than a foot band, a toe band or an ankle band. This image is courtesy of NEXT UK where you can buy these no-shows online. Briefer versions exist from other manufacturers.
In the past we might have thought them a variation of trouser socks, but they are not true socks as they don't even totally cover the foot. The intention is that there is no show. The reason that some women still wear tights in summer, even on hot days, is to protect their feet with a fine layer between shoe and foot. Many have thought the heat discomfort worth it to not have raw rubbed feet.
These no-show items are meant to be worn with sandals and other summer footwear to prevent chafing and blisters in hot weather. No-shows are the new answer to uncomfortably hot tights. Pantyhose manufacturers are clapping their hands at the development of this new product ever since the no-show concept was created in 2001. Please don't confuse no-shows with stocking fabric trouser socks to the knee. The no-shows are a slip-on and on occasion, a little like complimentary airplane slippers you may have been given on long flights, or perhaps similar to a brief and simple tennis wrist sweat band. Note that Michael Kors will be releasing no-shows this autumn.

Google Decides YouTube Is Worth $1.65 Billion In Play Money Plus Any Additional Legal Hassles
After a lot of rumors over the past few days, Google and YouTube made it official, as the online-video site has sold out for $1.65 billion in Google stock. The sale represents the successful execution of the Skype strategy of using the media to seed the idea that the company was worth so much. Seeing as Google spends so much already on its infrastructure and bandwidth, this should put to rest any discussion of how much it costs YouTube to host all those videos. The next worry, of course, is making nice with the content owners, something that the company been pursuing actively. Just today, the site signed deals with Universal, CBS, and Sony BMG. The challenge is not just to get the entertainment companies on board, but to do it in such a way that allows YouTube to remain cool; this was what Napster failed to do when it went legit. Obviously, $1.65 billion is a high price to pay for a young company with an uncertain outlook, but it's known that Google sees big things for online video, and so far hasn't had much success in the space. There's bound to be a lot of pundits giving their thumbs up or thumbs down to the deal. One of the most outspoken on YouTube is Mark Cuban, who of course has a lot of experience with billion-dollar buyouts of video companies. He said this weekend that this deal would be beyond moronic, and that Google can expect scads of lawsuits, not necessarily from big content companies, but from small copyright owners looking for somebody to sue. Now we get our chance to see if he's correct.
Adieus, Wei Lian, Kelly & Junyang
Kwok Kar Peng
By the end of this year, Tan Wei Lian, Kelly Poon and Hong Junyang would no longer be our stars-next-door. The three homegrown singers, brought to fame a year ago by Singapore viewers via singing competition Project SuperStar, would be heading north to Taiwan and China to conquer bigger pastures. After witnessing their metamorphoses from being a gawky youth, an unpolished beauty and a geeky undergrad, to possessing self-assured confidence on stage and in front of inquisitive reporters, one can heave a sigh of reluctance and let these newbies venture into unchartered territories. In perhaps our last interview with them, we ask Wei Lian, Kelly and Junyang their plans for the future and with what emotions they would have leaving our tiny island. Wei Lian last year Wei Lian today
Kelly last year Kelly today Junyang last year Junyang today
Where’s Wei Lian going? The tentative plan right now is for Wei Lian to go to China first to further his career most likely at the end of this year. “Of course I’m ok with going China! Any chance for me to further my music career, I would want to pursue,” he stressed. How does Wei Lian feel about leaving? “It’s every artiste hope to go international. I’m definitely not scared because I’m a very independent person. I travel overseas for holidays with my friends and we go our own way there. Plus, I eat anything!” he chattered warmly. His family is naturally very happy for him. He added, “My parents never expected their son would have this chance! The transition from a street busker to a record-selling singer is quite amazing and things have changed so much in this one year.” What must Wei Lian bring with him? “I must bring my laptop, handphone and MP3 player. I’m not a sentimental person so no teddy bears etc,” he declared. What will Wei Lian miss? “I’ll miss Singapore if I stay overseas for too long. Even though I can talk to my friends via MSN or Skype, we’re communicating only via text and it’s not the same as being with them face to face.” What I’ll miss about Wei Lian: His startling independence, straightforwardness with issues that sighted people think are sensitive and his chattiness. |
Where’s Kelly going? The skinny girl with the big voice will be heading to Taiwan or Beijing, China by the end of this year. At the helm of her foray into the international music scene is Yao Chien, the man who behind the successes of Taiwanese singing sensations Coco Lee and Elva Hsiao. In the meantime, Kelly will be completing her endorsement obligations with Zenique, Maybelline and NETS, and other performances like the upcoming 6th Global Chinese Music Awards later this month. How does Kelly feel about leaving? “Since I’ll be away overseas for a long period of time, I tell myself I must be steady, and can’t stick to my family. I have to be independent, but I think I’ve already prepared myself since I was an air stewardess before and have been away from home up to nine days. Never mind, I can always MSN my friends every day. I’m very happy that my family is very supportive; my mum may even follow me there and stay for the first few weeks,” she said. Even though she’s scared, Kelly put on a brave front and told us she’ll take her new work overseas seriously. In preparation, she’s taking piano, dance and language classes now. “I adapt to new environments very well so I think I should be ok there. It’s just that I can be quiet initially and people might think I have an attitude problem. But if I talk a lot with people I’ve just met, they’ll think I’m weird,” she added. What must Kelly bring with her? “I must bring the Buddha pendant my mum gave me, my laptop, my doggy soft toy and just whatever else I can bring with me!” laughed Kelly. What will Kelly miss? “I will miss my family, friends and food like roti prata, nasi lemak and curry. Even though Taiwan and China has spicy food like ma la soup, it’s not curry!” she moaned. What I’ll miss about Kelly: Her very effervescent and laidback character, her slightly auntie-ish talkative nature and lack of airs. |
Where’s Junyang going? After a very successful debut album launched earlier in May, one would expect Junyang to plunge immediately into the production of his second album, but instead he chooses to take a Sabbath. “Things happened too fast this past one year and I never had time to ponder about what I want. Now, I want to take a step back to absorb, study, train myself and think about the road I want to take,” he told us in Mandarin, his weaker language, so as to improve his mastery of it. Because before the year ends, Junyang will be packing his bags to Taiwan to live for a few months to familiarise himself with the environment and catch up with friends like buddy JJ Lin Junjie and Malaysian singer Lin Yu Zhong. He believes a change of environment would help in his song-writing. Right now, he’s furthering his knowledge about music, writing songs and reading more books written in traditional Chinese. How does Junyang feel about leaving? “I’m not worried at all; in fact I’m looking forward to a new life there because I’ve always to see the world. When I’m in Taiwan, I’ll get to see for myself how people protest haha!” he joked. Neither is he feeling fretful about the notorious Taiwanese paparazzi. He explained, “Every job has its sacrifices. The paparazzi is ok, after all, Taipei is so big so the artistes and reporters are all spaced out.” What must Junyang bring with him? “All my music equipment, including my laptop which I write music with… these are very important… money, my bolster and family photos,” he told us. What I’ll miss about Junyang: His genuine happiness every time he meets us, his goofy laughter and blur look His second album will most probably be released next year. |
On another note: We met Misaki (left) and Kuek (right) of SuperBand's Lucify at the Project SuperStar Top 24 audition last Sun Oct 8 and learned that despite Warner Music expressing interest in signing them on at the SuperBand Grand Final, they have not been approached for a contract. Lucify is considering funding their debut album and also organising a mini-concert. Stay glued for more news! |
